Our route will focus on East Africa until Mozambique, at which point we will cross to West Africa to explore the Okovango Delta and Skeleton Coast before approaching Cape Agulhas via the Garden Route from the East. The pink sections in the map below are possible detours and trips to see things of interest slightly off our main route.

The route is very far from finalised, with the planning of each leg as much the responsibility of our co-drivers in the second vehicle as ourselves.

Ok ok, spelling mistake corrected. AS

  2. GAZ says:

When are you leaving, we are in Sutton waiting for a clear spell and we are off via Egypt

  3. Andy says:

Gaz, we’re leaving Scotland on the 4th of January, entering Tunis on the boat from Genoa on the 20th. When are you going to be there? Would be cool to meet on the route, stay in touch!

  4. Hi Andrew. Look us up when you pass through Nairobi (which is where we are now). Came across your site just now, it being one of only about three that combine the words ‘Dodoma’ and ‘Simkins’ :)

  5. By the way, my cousin just completed something similar – although a very different route! Check out http://www.greattreksouth.com/route.htm

Daniel, really good to hear from you! Interesting way to find us – I know from the google logs that while I was in Dodoma, a lot of people were finding it by searching for things like “Cessna Tanzania” – not many sites mentioning words like that either!

We’ll let you know when we’re nearing Nairobi. We’re passing briefly on the way to Kili, but then planning to return on route to Uganda a bit later – probably around mid March.

Hi Andy, it’s Johnny from the Enda Africa trip. It’s crazy that there are so many Overland trips originating from the Ashby! Our trip takes a different route into Africa from you guys, We couldn’t be bothered with (or afford) the hassle of Libya so we have decided to mess with the middle east instead. We are leaving half way through June and finishing hopefully in early September… it will be interesting to see if our paths overlap at any stage… We are in a Cruiser Colorado so have the same 1kz te engine as your Surfs…. Hopefully we won’t need to steal any of your parts in the middle of a desert somewhere ;) We will be following your trip closely… picking up tips for smoothing border crossings.

  8. Andy says:

Hi Jonathan, good to hear from you. Yeah, the middle east option sometimes seems like it would have been better, but the theme of our trip is finding people to join us, and it was easier to find people who wanted to drive in Africa than Europe or the Middle East, so we’re getting into North Africa as quickly as possible. Libya’s not actually looking like the most expensive or difficult country – Sudan will probably take that prize. Visas are hard to come by at the moment – you might find it easier when you’ll be there.

The 1kz-te is a good lump – make sure you’re confident in the cooling though, they have a habit of cracking the cylinder head if they overheat (see http://www.surfingafrica.net/2010/08/06/a-major-engine-repair/ ). We got our radiator re-cored, and have fitted serious temperature monitoring to know for sure if anything starts to go wrong again.

  16. Hi there, it’s the Enda Africa guys again.
It’s amazing to see how well the trip is going and I hope everything continues to go smoothly for you guys now that the pace is less frenetic.
We are planning like crazy now that we have finally reached a holiday period without as many uni deadlines screaming… however our plan to import the vehicle to South Africa appears to have collapsed due to the technicalities of our South African team member’s residency plans… Which sadly leaves us looking at shipping.

Are you guys shipping back? If so would you be able to tell us which company you have chosen? I greatly appreciate any contacts you can give us… as shipping companies are very unresponsive to us at the minute.

(don’t worry about moderating this comment…. whatever response is easiest is good for us, our email is rhspm@hotmail.co.uk thanks a lot !)
